About Us

Saint Paul American Scholars (SPAS) is designed to help teach young people to become responsible citizens and prepare students for college. That means that they must learn the key attributes of ethical behavior including courage, compassion, integrity, justice, truth, reason, fairness, respect, and honesty in addition to the core academic subjects.

A positive school climate is characterized by quality teaching by instructors and effective learning by students. This requires a safe environment for all who work in and attend SPAS along with an emphasis on citizenship and adherence to rules applied equitably and fairly to all in the Saint Paul community. We believe that parents are essential partners in the educational process and must be properly involved and accountable for the achievement and behavior of their children.

Curriculum

Saint Paul American Scholars utilizes international academic standards for the foundation of their lesson and assessment structures. Academic standards identify what students should know and be able to do in the classroom within a given subject or content area. Standards serve as goals for student learning, guideposts for classroom instruction, and a framework for assessment.  The standards used at SPAS in 2022 are: Common Core Math, Common Core English, Next Generation Science Standards, and AERO for Social Studies.

The vision for SPAS is to create a continuous path of education from kindergarten to college by applying data-driven decisions on learning to our American-style education system.  The elementary program is the second step in our vision to bring a fully mapped education to students.  Our elementary program will build up developing skills in a student’s journey to secondary school while building a strong link between parents, students, and teachers to address student difficulties and work cooperatively toward student goals for growth.

The secondary program is the final step in our vision to bring your students a fully mapped education to students.  Our secondary program is designed to ready students for the rigors of college by acclimating them to commonly used computer programs, providing literacy growth opportunities, and implementing a more mature schedule and rigor in classroom instruction.

Reasons to work at Saint Paul American Scholars

Saint Paul American Scholars is on a continuous cycle of improvement with education, teachers, and students as our central focus.  As an accredited institution, we drive our decision making on data that we can see, understand, and apply.  Our team of administrators are all educators with backgrounds  and experiences in the classrooms and staff leadership roles.  To be a part of the SPAS team is to share beliefs in education on every level of our organization.

We offer both short term and long term benefits, signing bonuses, Korean Health Insurance, and support for teachers coming from aboard for the first time to work with us.  In addition, we organize and deliver in-house  professional development sessions, support internships for teaching certificates and licensing, as well as in-house trainings on technology and logistics for the day-to-day.  And we are still growing.

Part of working at SPAS is conducting two after-school activities every week. Those activities are designed by our teachers based on their interests and passions.  We have several activities that are staples of our school – yearbook, Student Council, and SPAS news - for those teachers who want to be involved on a larger level and make a bigger impact on our campus culture.

We want all our of teachers to have a healthy work/life balance.  Living in the Gwanggyo area, you are easily connected to Seoul and Suwon. The public transportation around the school via bus, subway or taxi allows you to move freely during your free time and days off.  Nearby the school there are large shopping malls, dozens of restaurants, a variety of grocery stores, and mountain hiking paths.

Points for Consideration

  • The school has both Korean and foreign students.
  • The location of the school is great for those who love the city life or the one’s who would like to be more in touch with nature.
  • Our school is constantly growing and expanding. That means there is plenty of room for career growth.

Admirable Traits in our Team Members

Our teachers need to be experienced, creative, and have a strong work ethic. SPAS seeks to work with educators – individuals who understand that being in the classroom is more than delivering a lesson, but know methods differentiation, data analysis, teamwork, communication, and a focus on the holistic child rather than just the grade they earn.

HR Interview

Gregory Aiello, Principal of St. Paul Gwanggyo

What makes SPAS Gwanggyo stand out from other schools in Korea?

SPAS Gwanggyo is an accreditated institution structured for teacher and student support. We have a deep administrative team with assigned roles and duties as well as many of the usual structures in place for curriculum, lesson mapping, and differentiation. What makes our school stand out from others is the team itself. Our team is unique and our approach to the structures we have in place comes from the supportive experiences and contributions that can't be found online, can't be downloaded, and can't be imitated. We don't employ teachers at Saint Paul Gwanggyo, we employ educators.

What is your mission at SPAS Gwanggyo?

SPAS focuses on the use of data-driven decision-making in order to guide students through their educational journey. Our mission is:

  • Data-Driven: To use data from our standardized, diagnostic tests to show growth and progress for students, parents, and teachers to apply and support learning.
  • Student Development: To focus on student emotional growth, age-relevant maturity, respect, and self-control.
  • Global Education: To deliver American-based education that enables global-mindedness and growth.
  • English Instriction: To deliver all classes, assignments, and assessments in English.

SPAS Gwanggyo provides modern and high-technology facilities, so students would be able to fully enjoy learning and be creative. The main building consists of classrooms, a cafeteria, a computer lab, a library, and a rooftop gym. We also upgraded a new building that includes more classrooms, a science lab, as well as an indoor gym. Not to forget, we provide a health service and shuttle bus service for our students. We ensure the safety of our facilitites and is highly selective in choosing the ingredients for the food we serve to the children.

SPAS Bundang, an extension of the Gwanggyo campus, was established to accommodate the growing number of students. It specifically hosts our secondary program and operates in close coordination with the Gwanggyo campus, providing a seamless academic experience across both locations. Together, these campuses offer a comprehensive education experience for students in modern and spacious environments.

Yongin, where our Gwanggyo campus is located, is a city almost as large as Seoul by area. It consists of the highly urbanized districts of Suji-gu and Giheung-gu, as well as the more rural Cheoin-gu district. Suji-gu and Giheung-gu, home to corporations like Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Automotive, have contributed to the region’s growing population. These districts are surrounded by modern apartments, schools, parks, and country clubs. Nearby attractions include the Korean Folk Village and Everland, South Korea's largest theme park.

Bundang, a district in Seongnam-si, is one of South Korea’s most well-developed suburban areas. Known for its modern infrastructure, Bundang is a prime residential area with high-rise apartments, office complexes, and cultural facilities. It is home to Pangyo Techno Valley, a major technology hub that hosts companies like Kakao, Naver, and numerous start-ups. Bundang offers a high standard of living, with green spaces such as Yuldong Park and Tancheon River for outdoor activities, as well as shopping districts and fine dining options

Both campuses benefit from excellent transport links. Yongin’s urban districts are located close to Seoul, with convenient access via the Bundang and Shinbundang subway lines, or by metropolitan buses. The area is approximately 30–40 minutes from downtown Seoul by car via the Gyeongbu Expressway or Yongin-Seoul Expressway.
