Job Description

Student Opinion Writing Instructor

Remote | Freelance Contract | 3-Month Term

We are seeking an experienced Student Opinion Writing Instructor to help young writers develop their ideas into publication-ready opinion pieces.

This is not a general ESL teaching position.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in journalism, reporting, editorial writing, professional editing, or advanced writing instruction who can help students develop their ideas and guide them through the writing and revision process until their work is ready for publication.

Student articles completed through the program are published through our official media partnerships with The Korea Times and Korea JoongAng Daily.

Work Arrangement

  • Fully remote

  • Classes conducted via Zoom or Google Meet and recorded

  • Sessions are generally scheduled within agreed-upon hours so that a member of our team can provide operational support

  • 3-month contract

  • Preference will be given to instructors interested in working with us over multiple terms

The next term is scheduled to begin in November 2026, and we aim to complete the hiring process by October. We are open to hiring as soon as we find the right candidate.

Contract Term

The program begins with 4 small-group sessions, followed by one-on-one coaching sessions. The instructor is expected to guide students through the process until their final articles are completed and ready for publication. The exact schedule may vary slightly depending on program needs.

Who We Are Looking For

We will give preference to candidates with one or more of the following backgrounds:

  • Current or former journalist or reporter

  • Writer for a newspaper, magazine, journal, or digital publication

  • Professional editor or developmental editor

  • Opinion or editorial writer

  • Writing coach with experience developing work to a publishable standard

  • Academic or professional writing instructor

Candidates without direct journalism experience may also be considered if they have strong academic credentials, combined with substantial professional writing or editing experience.

Korean nationals, overseas Koreans, and foreign nationals are all welcome to apply.

Required Qualifications

  • Native or near-native English writing proficiency

  • Excellent command of English composition, argumentation, structure, style, and voice

  • Strong editing skills that go beyond grammar and surface-level correction

  • Ability to provide substantive, content-focused feedback

  • Ability to communicate effectively with upper-elementary, middle, and high school students

  • Ability to guide students in developing their own writing rather than writing or heavily rewriting the work for them

  • Strong time-management skills and reliability in meeting deadlines

  • Interest in building a long-term working relationship

  • For foreign applicants, a valid F-series visa that permits employment in Korea

  • A portfolio or other verifiable evidence of relevant professional experience

Students

  • Primarily Grades 5–7

  • Mainly upper-elementary and middle school students

  • Occasional high school students

  • Korean students, many of whom attend international schools

  • Approximately 12 students per cohort

  • Small-group classes of approximately 2–3 students

Key Responsibilities

Over the course of each three-month term, you will work with students to develop opinion pieces for publication.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting 4 small-group writing sessions per group

  • Conducting 3 one-on-one writing coaching sessions per student

  • Teaching via Zoom or Google Meet, with each session lasting approximately 60 minutes

  • Helping students develop ideas, perspectives, and arguments

  • Guiding students in building clear claims, supporting evidence, logical structure, and effective organization

  • Providing substantive editing and feedback on drafts

  • Helping students revise while preserving their individual voice

  • Guiding each selected piece to a publication-ready standard

  • Maintaining a publication schedule of 2 student opinion pieces per month across the cohort

  • Supporting the completion and publication of 6 pieces over each 3-month term

The goal is for final drafts to be strong enough that the newspaper’s editorial desk only needs to make final copyedits and stylistic refinements, rather than substantial changes to the content or structure.

Curriculum & Class Preparation

You will not be expected to design the curriculum from scratch.

The company provides:

  • The overall curriculum

  • Writing process and instructional guidelines

  • Student assignments and homework

  • Program structure

  • Publication schedule

This allows the instructor to focus primarily on:

  • Teaching

  • Student mentoring

  • Idea development

  • Strengthening logic and structure

  • Professional editing and feedback

  • Developing publication-ready work

Group and one-on-one sessions do not need to follow the same fixed weekly frequency throughout the term. The pacing may be adjusted within the program schedule, provided that monthly publication deadlines are met.

Portfolio Requirement

A portfolio is required.

It does not need to be elaborate. We simply need verifiable examples of your professional experience.

Examples may include:

  • Published articles

  • Journalism clips

  • Columns or opinion pieces

  • Editorial work

  • Professional writing samples

  • Examples of substantive or developmental editing

  • Other materials demonstrating relevant journalism, writing, or editing experience

Compensation

KRW 150,000 per student per month for 3 months

For example, if you are assigned 6 students for the full three-month term:

  • KRW 900,000 per month
  • KRW 2,700,000 total for the three-month term

Final compensation will depend on the actual number of students assigned.

Hiring Process

  1. Resume / CV review

  2. Portfolio review

  3. Short Zoom interview

For this position, we are less concerned with general English-teaching experience than with whether you can: recognize strong writing,
help students develop their ideas, and
guide their work to a genuinely publication-ready standard.

Salary

KRW 150,000 per student/month
